Valhalla Missile Silo
Located in Abilene, TX, is the Valhalla Atlas-F Missile Silo which is privately owned by Family Scuba. A whopping 174 feet deep by 52 feet in diameter, this silo was one of 12 Atlas Missile silos commissioned at nearby Dyess Airforce Base during the cold war as part of the United States' quick reaction defense system to which the Atlas-F Thermonuclear ICBM called home. The Atlas series of ICBMs were in active deployment from 1959-1965 and then decommissioned as a weapon of war, into a tool of space exploration. These 12 missile silos were then decommissioned in part due to the missile's technology aging rapidly (being rapidly replaced with newer, better ICBM capabilities). Most, if not, all of these silos have been purchased by private entities, to which Valhalla is one of them.
Diving Valhalla is unique in that it is one of the only man-made, nature-reclaimed dive sites that is an altitude, deep, and night dive, all rolled into one location. Valhalla's location is 2,500 feet above sea level. The water depth varies depending on the depth of the water table, but averages approximately 110-130 feet deep and maintains a temperature of roughly 60 degrees Fahrenheit year round and is incredibly clear! Valhalla also boasts a 2 level living quarters that was once a command center and living quarters but has been converted into living quarters by the owner.
